EP donates a Baobab tree. Help us name it.

baobab1.jpgWe got turned on to a great idea by Marshall K who’s filling in at techcrunch this week. A new community website, Tree-Nation, allows visitors to give a donation that goes towards planting a tree and fighting desertification in the poorest nation on Earth, Niger (not to be confused with Nigeria.)

The [for profit] organization hopes to plant 8 million trees in the middle of the Saharan desert forming a park in the shape of a heart that would be visible by satellite imagery.

Some might think this sounds a bit left of center. Some might think it sounds fishy. We think it sounds pretty noble. So we donated.

And now we need a name for our tree (Tree-Nation lets you locate and name your tree,) so we’re soliciting your help. Any ideas for a Baobab tree that lives 2,000 years and helps fight desertification, poverty and global warming all along the way?

Read more about the program via the United Nations Environment Programme site and more about desertification in Niger at NYTimes.

What kind of monkey is going to live in a tree named “Brad74″? Thanks for your suggestion, but, come on.

  3. brad74

    A cool monkey.

    Alright, how about just “Brad”?

Upon further research, it would appear as though it would be a Red Colobus Monkey (Procolobus badius), which was recently discovered in the Niger Delta, according to the Cambridge Journal.

Given this new information, I think you call it “Procolobus Bradius74″.

Casa Procolobus Bradius74… It’s in the running.

    The…

    Earth Monger
    Ground Clencher
    Sky Reacher

    …or Fred.

Thanks for the tip on that cool company.

I presume this is where I leave name for your tree. The name offered are rther sick, but here is a good one based on the reason for its mission of hope.

As a tree that lives so long and with the mission and/or reason/prupose for puroise I woiuld name it [The Evoution Tree] as that is what needs to take place with humanity to evolve.

    Best wishes on promoting this.

tana, the italian word that means “shelter”. children often use this term during their jokes and games

    Name the tree:

    Pulp This

  11. Tim

I second the vote for naming it Wood Pulp

  12. Skippy

    Either name it

    Black Magic
    or
    False Hope

Black Magic if you believe anthropogenic CO2 has caused global warming. False Hope if you believe, like the Russian Physics Society, current temperatures are caused by increased solar radiation.

If you really care about Niger, pray the Russians are right. Earth will cool significantly by mid-century if they are. Africa will be wetter as a result, and with luck, your tree will drown.

Wow, the comment above me sure is bitter.

I would have to go with a cliche name…

    The Prince

Who doesn’t love the children’s book which featured not only time travel, but baobab’s tearing apart planets!

    I would name your tree:

    Pulp Reality
(maybe Pulp Realitree if you’re feeling creative)
