Making the Internet More America
If the Internet feels slower today, it may be due in part to a new site we just launched called MakeMeAmerica.com.
What started out as a humble effort to sell a few books has turned into something more: a humble effort with big pictures, hero profiles, video excerpts, a petition to Oprah, flickr photo integration, and an interactive world domination map. (And lots of easter eggs.)
The book, I Am America (And So Can You), is written by Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report on Comedy Central and namesake of a baby bald eagle in Bonita Springs.
The Colbert team quickly determined that, in addition to being able to read books, the show’s audience also seemed to have ready access to the internets. One idea turned into two, and pretty soon, Electric Pulp was in on the plan. The rest, as they say, is history.

Awesome. And hilarious. Prepare to be ribbed about the special call for Africans to sign the Oprah petition (by the same logic: for the people of Guam/strong swimmers to submit video excerpts; for the Eiffel tower to be in Mexico.)

This new site for IAAASCY is AMAZING! It’s got such rich graphics, it’s got bells and whistles but not annoying Flash, it’s got a fantastic concept, it’s just … WOW!
Can you go redesign ColbertNation.com now please? Seriously?

Highly amused that the ‘world map’ happens to be centred on america. Which makes sense, as it’s an american site. but why not ‘launch map of north america’?

The site looks good. The only thing that bothers me, as a photographer, is that on the homepage his line of site leads you off the page. I can’t stop looking over to the right for something.

How can I register when the account registration process calls for a zip code? Colbert has a lot of international fans, you know! Don’t you WANT to see pins on the map in other countries?

Oh, and there’s no way I can find to leave feedback about the site, actually ON the site. It’s just as well I found your blog here. But it’s really not good practice to not have a way of contacting someone about the site!!

The site looks really awesome! It’s always nice to see a site look really crisp and dynamic that doesn’t rely on using flash. It’s driving me nuts that there are easter eggs though, I haven’t found any yet *shakes fist*

Thanks everyone for the comments. It’s been fun to watch the site as people uncover all the dark corners.
A couple notes…
DB: We’d love to. Thanks for asking. Your posting there puts you in charge, right?
Huph: Yeah, that was the lighting for the shoot, I think. I’m going to see what we can do about alternating the shots on the front of the site (there are three).
Ian: You mean, there’s something outside of North America? I guess you learn something every day.
Mike: I know it! Kinda hard to flip a photo of a guy like Mr. Colbert without it being obvious. It was bugging me too. We’ve got more, so I’ll see if any of them fit into the layout for when we start rotating.
Coldbear: Stay tuned for international support. We’re currently getting a handle on the number of pins we have already. We’ll work on expanding the horizons shortly.

A quality site through and through, very graphic with a bit of panache.
That said… “the guy is kind of a nut”.
I haven’t seen much of his stuff, but why does he remind me of Steve Carell (40-year old virgin), but not as funny. Looks like an outrageously fun project though.
