sanford.gifOne of the largest gifts to a medical center ever was just announced in our fair city. T. Denny Sanford of First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard Inc is donating $400M to Sioux Valley Hospitals & Health System.

The gift will further propel Sioux Falls as a key player in health care and medical research. Early commentary compares the new initiatives to those of renowned institutions like the Mayo Clinic.

This announcement promises to have a huge impact on the area’s economy, culture, and health.

In the spirit of full disclosure, both PREMIER and Sioux Valley, now Sanford Health, are Electric Pulp clients. We would have been excited all the same were they not - healthiness is good.

Update: Paul Ten Haken, former pulpster and current Director of Marketing (Regional system) for Sanford Health, writes about the gift here.

New Music Tuesdays can be stressful. Right? What if we told you there was a simple widget available that would make music recommendations for you?

Well, it’s true. We’ve been working with InRadio for the past few weeks on a compact version of their imp (Intelligent Media Platform) player. Both players allow you to sample free music and videos using BitTorrent technology, but the Media Taster (seen below) can plug right into your site.

You’re going to start seeing the taster popping up on sites across the Internet (there’s a smaller version available for sidebars as well.) Just remember you saw it here first.

Update: Our friend Garrick has an interview with Dan Carroll of imp at FirstCrackPodCast.

Some of you may be familiar with our previous, nubby tired, company vehicle, the Pulp Truck. We bought the vehicle for travel convenience and then stickered it up to let the world know when we were near.

But then we started hearing about this global warming thing. Maybe the world was aware of us for reasons other than our stickers and vanity plates? Maybe the planet knew us more by our emissions?

That left a bad taste in our mouths (perhaps it was actually a foul smell in the air?) Anyway, last week we heard Al Gore speak. And if nothing else, we can tell you that he has a promising career in car sales if his documentary efforts don’t take off. Shortly after hearing him speak, we went out and bought a 60mpg, low emission hybrid. (Okay, we were going to do it any way, but that doesn’t mean Gore couldn’t sell cars.)

So, if you start seeing a little red Prius speeding around the area with PULP license plates, don’t worry. No Touaregs were hurt in the transition. And if we ever cut you off, weaving in and out of traffic, we’re sorry. The last electric car we had was a TYCO race car - we’re still adjusting.

Smashing magazine has just posted the “most beautiful designs we’ve seen in 2006,” and our site (the site you’re at unless you’re reading this in rss) made the list.

Us: Woohoo! We’d like to thank Smashing, our mothers, and the man upstairs.

It seems like only yesterday that we were blogging about using online assessment tools to make the world a better place, and here it is another day with another example. Today’s featured tool comes in the form of a second aptitude test for hero blogger, Guy Kawasaki.

Perhaps tomorrow’s example could include you. Only time will tell.

As the health insurance provider for more than half a million Nebraskans, we’d like to think that BlueCross BlueShield of Nebraska knows how to spot a good health assessment. One of the reasons we’d like to think that is that they’ve selected us to provide their health assessment solution for the second year (via our sister company, Wellstream.)

We’ll hold off on defining Personal Health Assessments for another post, but we will say that Wellstream is a great example of creating the right online tools to dramatically enhance a service. So, if you’re in the market for a prettier/friendlier/more flexible/more secure/more robust/better solution, we’d love a chance to help you too.

After all prettier/friendlier/more flexible/more secure/more robust/better is our middle name.

Whether or not you’re into motorcycles, you’ve probably heard of the Biker Build-Off series running for it’s fifth year on the Discovery Channel. The show airs every Monday at 8pm CST.

And If you haven’t heard of the show, maybe you’ve heard of Klock Werks Kustom Cycles, long time friend and client of Electric Pulp. Purveyor of fine motorcycles, builder of the World’s Fastest Bagger. Brian Klock’s team will be challenging Chopsmiths for the trophy on air, tonight (Monday, Oct 23.)

And finally, if we still haven’t hooked you, maybe you’ve heard of Electric Pulp. One of our bikes will pop in and out of the show - you might have to look pretty close, but it made the trip to Sturgis with the crew. So, be on the lookout for a big, rattlesnake green bagger with the [ep] logo. You can make a game out of it, take a shot every time you see it, for instance (just one idea.)

If you like the bikes, pay attention to KustomBaggers.com. The new site will be home to all of the parts seen on tv, in magazines, in catalogs, on pulpster bikes, etc.

pink_ribbon.jpgOctober is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we’re taking some steps to show our support. Most noticeably, we’ve modified our site (some of it at least) to be far more pink. While that alone won’t improve access to lifesaving screenings and treatment, it might get others to pitch in and do the other thing we’re doing. Pulp is giving a percentage of October revenue (again, not all of it) to the Susan G. Komen foundation. Maybe others will too.

If you are interested in going pink, you won’t be alone. Our favorite pinkified site out there is odeo (they actually show their support year-round.)

bluecrosslogo.jpgBlueCross BlueShield of Nebraska needed a site to act as a central location for health information, interactive tools, campaigns and programs. And since Electric Pulp builds sites that act as things, we knew we’d fit swimmingly.

The new site (Bluehealth Advantage) features a number of helpful health tools aimed at both individuals and employers, but if were picking favorites, we’d say we like the health education section best. Why so, you ask? Well, we learned things like just because certain fast foods taste like they should be good for you doesn’t necessarily mean they are. Take the Chicken Cordon Bleu, for instance. I lived on that thing for a good three years of my life. I now know that the Baked Potato, Plain (with less than half the calories) would have been the way to go. While I would never go through the drivethru of a fine dining establishment and just order a baked potato plain, I might consider a Light Roast Chicken Deluxe, which was only slightly lower on the list and actually does sound rather tasty (maybe that’s just the noon hour talking.) And that could make me healthier.

If that hasn’t sold you on going out to check out the site, I’ll leave you with two final words: discount pedometers.

hummelIn an effort to keep up with our ever-expanding workload and use more than our fair share of hyphenated words, we’ve decided to man-up person-up. The person-man we’ve added in this case is Jason Hummel. Working ‘on-location’ in beautiful Fargo, ND, he’s already started digging in — cracking out projects like the work-horse that he is.

Since we only see him in-person every-so-often, we’re not sure what he wears while he’s working, but judging from this recent photo, it appears he favors Lederhosen, the traditional garb of both the Fargonian and Germanic peoples.

Regardless of what he’s wearing, he’s spreading joy throughout the halls of Electric Pulp, even though we’re only graced with his physical presence every-once-in-a-while. We honestly couldn’t be more pleased to have him on-board.

Welcome, Jason.

Extreme MakeoverHome building isn’t a skill we possess. But spotting good and decent causes is a little easier. When client Signature Homes was selected as the primary contractor for the upcoming ABC Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, it made sense for us to jump in and lend a hand. And since building a website for the project was one of the needs, we thought that might be the place for us to focus.

For more information on the Thibodeau family, check out the site. We’ll give the overview: they deserve a break.

To sum up our post, this is a wholly good and decent effort, and we’re partially involved. You could say the net effect makes us look somewhat good and decent.

Electric Pulp was recently selected to create a site for the first nationwide effort aimed at preventing wildlife from becoming endangered. The project will act as a hub to connect 56 state and territorial action plans, federal and private conservation groups, and numerous other doers of good.

We wanted this project. Keep your eyes peeled to see what we can do for unquestionably noble causes.
